Millencolin crank up Machine 15

I’ve always said that Millencolin are the punk rock answer to Abba: their Swedish, there’s four of them, they write catchy, upbeat, hook-laden tunes with great big harmonies and they’re gay icons (okay, maybe not) …

Anyway, it’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything from the boys from Örebro, so fans of the band will be relieved to know that they’ve got a new record, entitled Machine 15, coming out on mighty, mighty Epitaph on May 6.

According to guitarist Mathias Farm, “I think it’s great. It’s different from what we’ve done before and we’re stoked!”

The band’s other guitarist, Erik Ohlsson, is very enthusiastic about the lead-off single, “Detox,” which he says is “ripe with harmony vocals, an infectious melody that gives nods to both the Beatles and the Beach Boys, and seven chord changes.”

Sounds intriguing to me, but regrettably I can’t hear it yet. However, their MySpace page is now featuring track #9, “Brand New Game,” which should please the faithful and make a few new converts along the way. The band hired producer Lou Giordano, the same guy who helped Sugar make records like Copper Blue sound so frickin’ huge, so I personally can’t wait to hear the whole damn thing (yo, Epitaph, call me!).

The band has a slew of bookings coming up in April and June in Australia and Europe. Perhaps that means yet to be announced North American dates in May and early June (a boy can dream, can’t he?).
