Story of the Year: The Black Swan

April 21st, 2008 by stv

Story of the Year
The thing I hate about most “modern rock” bands is the tendency they have of trying to blend the disparate elements of pop songs, punk anthems and metal riffs into a radio-friendly homogenized pile of poo. Thankfully, that’s only a guideline, not a rule, and it’s a guideline Story of the Year disregard.

As The Black Swan’s opening track, “Choose Your Fate,” proves in spades, their punk elements could stand alone as pure punk songs, and their monster metal riffs are often reminiscent of Pantera’s finest work.

Also, singer Dan Marselsa gets the quote of the year (so far) award for this little gem:

I hope people really read into the lyrics and respect the fact that we don’t sing about lollipops and gummi-bears.

Just in case there were any doubts.
