SXSW: More bands than you could shake a stick at

Everything’s bigger in Texas (that’s why you don’t mess with it). Well, somehow they’ve managed to squeeze a grand total of 1,594 bands into Austin’s 5-day SXSW music festival this March. That’s an average of 318.8 bands a day. From Brooklyn’s A-Alikes to Austin’s own Zykos, this year’s line-up offers everything from the big names (perhaps you’ve heard of this band from Georgia called R.E.M.) to the lesser known (such as the very interestingly and aptly named Psychedelic Horseshit from Columbus, OH, or $hit and $hine from London) and all points in between.

The Breeders have bred again

After six years, the Breeders will finally be unleashing their fourth album, Mountain Battles, on the 7th of April. They’ll be on the road to celebrate the release with a whole slew of live dates between March and June, including appearances at such low key events as Canadian Music Week, Austin’s SxSW festival, and Coachella.

They Might Be Giants

Perennial goofballs They Might Be Giants have decided it’s time for a follow up to Here Come the ABCs, their kid-friendly CD/DVD ode to the alphabet. This time, they’re paying tribute to numbers with Here Come the 123s. Yes, this means that their unholy alliance with the Disney corporation is alive and well, but what are you gonna do? You can preview a couple of the tracks on their MySpace page (I really like the old school groove of “One Dozen Monkeys”).
