Five David Ford vids for the price of one

July 1st, 2008 by stv

Okay, I guess when you consider that everything on this site is free, the above statement doesn’t mean much, unless you actually take the time to watch through all five of these in which case you’ll really appreciate the true value of what’s being delivered on this page.

The one thing I really love about David Ford’s video work is that he never does the cop-out pantomime and lip sync you get with 99.99999% of all videos ever made by anyone else. With Ford, you always get a new perspective on the tune, such as his overdub bonanza reinterpretations of “Go to Hell” and “State of the Union.”

This version of “Alright Now,” originally from Ford’s most recent LP Songs for the Road, features Ford performing the song in four takes (one each for guitar, piano, bass and drums).

New Ben Folds Tunes Unveiled at Bonnaroo

June 20th, 2008 by stv

I was just thinking to myself that I’ve gone just about long enough without a new Ben Folds record. Fortunately for me, the wait will soon be over.

“Errant Dog”

It turns out that Mr. Folds has a new record dropping this fall, and when he played Bonnaroo last week he played three tunes from the new record. Thanks to the magic of YouTube, we’ve got them all (until Prince has them yanked).

Featuring Tom Waits, Radiohead, Bob Geldof, Bono, Tokyo Police Club, J. Lo, Bad Religion and Joe Strummer

Well, it looks like MP3s are slowly killing the radio stars, as music sales fall to their lowest level in over twenty years. It’s the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine.

Pitchfork has some pretty awesome photos of the first night of the Tom Waits “Glitter and Doom” tour. I hope he comes to Toronto. I haven’t had a chance to see him since Mule Variations, and I was in the second last row of the balcony (and it was still an awesome show).

Radiohead have narrowed down the finalists for their animated video contest. You can find out more details at the band’s MySpace page.

May 29th, 2008 by stv

Here I am from cheer on Vimeo.

I came across this very interesting video the other day and thought I’d share it with you. It’s for a song called “I am Here” by the Californian band Familiar Trees.

Millencolin: Machine 15

May 8th, 2008 by stv

Millencolin
I’m hoping that one day we can all look back on Millencolin’s new disc, Machine 15, as a transition record, the album where the Swedish pop-punk band really came into its own with a sly mix of punk rock attitude and mid-60s pop sensibility.

Simply stating that “Detox” is the standout track on the record is overstating the obvious to say the least. With it’s nods to the British Invasion sounds of yesteryear, it’s easily the most sophisticated bit of songcraft to come from these guys yet. Emphasis on yet. I’m really hoping for more of this in the future.

Prince Digs Radiohead

April 29th, 2008 by stv

Well, I’ll be jiggered, and you can knock me down with a feather. Prince has mad back catalogue, but when he played Coachella earlier this month, he whipped out this cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” in favour of any of his own tunes:

Richie Ramone’s Big Day in Court

April 23rd, 2008 by stv

It’s not often that I have a justifiable excuse to write about one of my favourite bands, the Ramones, especially now that Joey and Dee Dee have passed and Johnny makes no bones about his passion for things like the Republican party, the NRA, and Ronald Reagan (ew!). So, I’m going to take this chance while I can.

Richie Ramone - born Richard Reinhardt and also known as Richard Beau during his tenure with the Velveteens - played in the band from 1983 to 1987, taking over the drum chair from Tommy Ramone, who was originally the band’s manager (they started off in 1974 as a trio with Joey singing from behind the kit). While he was with the band, Richie penned six songs that ended up on Ramones records, including “Humankind,” “I Know Better Now,” and the minor hit “Somebody Put Something in my Drink” (see video above).

New David Ford Video and Contest

April 21st, 2008 by stv

I’ve said it before, and I’ll most likely say it again: David Ford is an extremely talented little monkey. The sooner everyone listens to me, the less I’ll have to say it.

Check out this new video (see above), recorded in one take earlier this month while he was passing through Brooklyn. The killer thing about this version of “Go To Hell” is that it’s a completely different arrangement than the version I caught live in March when he last rolled through Toronto. It also bears little resemblance to the recording on the album.

So if you enjoy the video, you’re probably saying to yourself, “I’d sure like to get a copy of his record.” Well, I just so happen to have a copy of Songs for the Road to give away.

We Were The States - Up Your Sleeve

April 12th, 2008 by stv

Here’s a new video for a tune I’ve been digging for the last few days. We Were the States are a 5-piece from Murfreesboro, Tennessee (of all places), and “Up Your Sleeve” is the first track on their new debut LP, Believe The Thieves.

I’m really looking forward to getting the album and cranking it in the car this summer. There’s something about their sound that reminds me of the early work of the Kinks on overdrive, and I definitely like that. A little sloppy, a little poppy and a whole lot of fun.

R.E.M. Get the Colbert Bump

April 3rd, 2008 by stv

It’s so hard for a young, unknown band to get some exposure these days. Thankfully, there’s the Colbert Bump, the inevitable rise in popularity one receives after appearing on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

The latest recipients of this prestigious honour are R.E.M., currently flogging their latest studio project, Accelerate.
