New David Ford Video and Contest

I’ve said it before, and I’ll most likely say it again: David Ford is an extremely talented little monkey. The sooner everyone listens to me, the less I’ll have to say it.

Check out this new video (see above), recorded in one take earlier this month while he was passing through Brooklyn. The killer thing about this version of “Go To Hell” is that it’s a completely different arrangement than the version I caught live in March when he last rolled through Toronto. It also bears little resemblance to the recording on the album.

So if you enjoy the video, you’re probably saying to yourself, “I’d sure like to get a copy of his record.” Well, I just so happen to have a copy of Songs for the Road to give away.

We Were The States - Up Your Sleeve

Here’s a new video for a tune I’ve been digging for the last few days. We Were the States are a 5-piece from Murfreesboro, Tennessee (of all places), and “Up Your Sleeve” is the first track on their new debut LP, Believe The Thieves.

I’m really looking forward to getting the album and cranking it in the car this summer. There’s something about their sound that reminds me of the early work of the Kinks on overdrive, and I definitely like that. A little sloppy, a little poppy and a whole lot of fun.

R.E.M. Get the Colbert Bump

April 3rd, 2008 by stv

It’s so hard for a young, unknown band to get some exposure these days. Thankfully, there’s the Colbert Bump, the inevitable rise in popularity one receives after appearing on Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report.

The latest recipients of this prestigious honour are R.E.M., currently flogging their latest studio project, Accelerate.

YouTube bans shred parodies

February 9th, 2008 by stv

I got into writing about music because I generally enjoy talking to musicians. For the most part, they’re a fairly interesting, good-humoured bunch who can appreciate a good dose of irony. But, evidently, this personality trait is not shared universally by all musicians.

Case in point - someone’s been complaining to YouTube about the work of parody artist Santeri Ojala, who specializes in taking videos of guitar gods (Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Slash, etc.), erasing the original audio and overdubbing his own guitar playing with hilarious results.

Metallica puts kids to sleep (perhaps they’re bored?)

Note to my high school self: you’re gonna kick yourself for ever liking Metallica. Not only will they try to sue their fans for file sharing even though they became multi-millionaires partly due to a whole lot of tape swapping back in the early days, but they’ll eventually sing the praises of having their tunes turned into muzak for babies.

Chicago trio The Buddyrevelles have just put out a new video for the track “I Dream of Rodney” from their album Don’t Quit on Solitaire Records. The video, directed by Joe Pickett of The Found Footage Festival, is based on a true story about a shopping spree at an ACE Hardware store (shot on location).
