Oh, how the mighty fall! It seems Steven Page, squeaky clean front man for the squeaky clean Scarborough band Barenaked Ladies, ran afoul of the authorities in upstate New York and has been charged with possession of cocaine.

As luck and irony would have it, the arrest comes as BNL celebrate the release of their first full-length album for children, Snack Time. There’s no word yet from Disney whether this will affect BNL’s participation in the Disney Music Block Party / PLAYSKOOL Play Aid Benefit Concert on Long Island later this summer.

Friend of gitpop Shawn Fogel has been busy in the studio lately with producer Peter Katis (Spoon, The National and Mates of State) working on a follow-up to last September’s One Day in the Desert EP. The record is slated for release in early 2009, but you can get a sneak peak by downloading this MP3 - “The Fight at the End of the Tunnel.” Also, if you happen to be in New York City on Monday night, you might want to go to The Mercury Lounge (217 E Houston) where Shawn will be playing with Eef Barzelay (of Clem Snide), Ferraby Lionheart and Brian Bonz. I got a nice surprise in my mailbox yesterday. It was jam-packed with lots of CDs for me to review, including three copies of The Redemption of Mr. Tom, the new EP by the Mancunian six-piece The Travelling Band. So I figured I should share my bounty with the world.
